Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
"A shockingly imaginative graphic novel that captures the sense of adventure and wonder that surrounds a new arrival on the shores of a shining new city. Wordless, but with perfect narrative flow, Tan gives us a story filled with cityscapes worthy of Winsor McCay." -- Jeff Smith, author of Bone

"A magical river of strangers and their stories!" -- Craig Thompson, author of Blankets

"Magnificent." -- David Small, Caldecott Medalist

In a heartbreaking parting, a man gives his wife and daughter a last kiss and boards a steamship to cross the ocean. He's embarking on the most painful yet important journey of his life - he's leaving home to build a better future for his family. Shaun Tan evokes universal aspects of an immigrant's experience through a singular work of the imagination. He does so using brilliantly clear and mesmerizing images. Because the main character can't communicate in words, the book forgoes them too. But while the reader experiences the main character's isolation, he also shares his ultimate joy.

5 out of 5 stars such a lovely illustrative story   September 6, 2010
K. Layne (Damascus, OR United States)
This book is such an unusual illustrative narrative that words don't do it justice. It evokes so many emotions and thoughts that it is quite interesting to see reactions of friends and family who pick it up off my coffee table. I really couldn't do it justice by giving it a verbal review. Really the review by RE Bird is excellent so I'll stop here.

5 out of 5 stars Very neat book   September 2, 2010
Louise Bell
This book is really great! It's been a while since I purchased it (as a gift) but I believe that it's only graphic, no words, and it's just incredibly visually descriptive. Very beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Beauty --- Words are not needed   July 13, 2010
M. Ferro (chicago, IL USA)
Just like his book, I am wordless to describe the beauty of his books. Give them a try you won't be disappointed. I can assure you have never had a book like this before. I also ordered "lost thing" that has been turned into an animation movie. This is a powerful story and the illustration is just magnificent. Hard work, beautiful book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing insight into the immigrant experience   May 25, 2010
Catherine C. Margerin (San Francisco, CA)
Appealing to adults as well as younger readers, the Arrival is a must-read book for anyone in Arizona or elsewhere. Shaun Tan's art is beautifully executed, the story is touching and universal using no language to convey a message of compassion and empathy for anyone forced to relocate in a new culture. With humor, creativity and artistry, this remarkable book makes us experience what it feels to arrive in a new place where all is different from what we are used to: the food, the language, the every day objects and to find work and a place to live. I recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars A Requirement for Every Home   May 20, 2010
R. Kato (CA USA)
If you've ever had reservations about buying a "comic book/graphic novel," throw them away this instant! This is a must treasure book. The art is not only gorgeous but evokes emotions to the highest degree. You'll see fantastical lands, strange creatures, and everyday life jump out to capture your mind. Don't miss out on this story!
