Amazon Exclusive: A Q&A with Author Maggie Stiefvater

Q: Shiver and Linger center on werewolves, yet your previous books were fantasy novels focused on the world of faeries. What draws you to the fantasy genre in the first place and what inspired you to switch from faeries to werewolves?

Stiefvater: Oh, I’ve always been addicted to contemporary fantasy--fantasy set in the real world. I’m thinking Diana Wynne Jones was possibly the one who first made me fall in love. But I remember all of these great middle grade books that were magic in the real world . . . The Girl With the Silver Eyes, The Castle in the Attic, The Indian in the Cupboard. All of the Narnia books. Mmmm. Now I’m wanting to re-read! I still have most of my favorites.

I guess I just love that feeling of otherness. Of moreness. That you could turn the corner and bam, something strange would be there. I was never drawn so much to a complete fantasy world. The appeal was slipping something fantastic very cleverly into our world. So werewolves . . . I happened on them by accident, when I was looking for something bittersweet to write about, something about losing your identity. I don’t think you’ll see werewolves from me again after this series. My next books are about other magical things altogether.

Q: What do you enjoy most about writing for young adults (and for those of us adults who can’t resist a good YA read)?

Stiefvater: I love writing for such a passionate audience. They’re not afraid to feel completely, to believe in true love, to want to be incredible people who may possibly also be astronauts or rock stars. Young adults want something more and that, in a nutshell, is what I like to write about.

Q: In Shiver, the narration alternates between Sam and Grace. In Linger, you add two more voices—Isabel and Cole St. Clair. What were the challenges (and joys!) of doing so?

Stiefvater: Oh, it was insane. The hard bit was keeping everyone’s voices straight and consistent of course. They had to sound distinct while still sounding like they belonged in the same book. Each had a distinct vocabulary. Sam, for instance, says “amongst.” The others can’t say amongst. Isabel has her own particular brand of swear words. Cole has his own way of describing the world. Grace sees action in a particular way. The challenge was picking which character narrated each scene; who saw what I needed the reader to see? They were all so different. Of course, that was the joy as well. Hard to get bored that way . . .

Q: At the end of Shiver, Olivia changes—a lot. What do you think she is doing right now?

Stiefvater: Something spoilery that I’m not going to tell you about.

Q: We read your blog and know you love music. If you had to pick one song each to represent Sam, Grace, Isabel, Cole, and Beck– which would you choose?

Stiefvater: First of all, thanks for reading my blog! And yes, I’m crazy about music. Okay. Songs for each character?

Sam: “A Message” by Coldplay. The sound is great, more acoustic than Coldplay’s usual stuff, and the lyrics are very appropriate for Sam.

Grace: “Winter Song” by Ingrid Michaelson & Sara Bareilles. It’s a song about wanting things, but it’s also a peaceful song, which I think speaks to Grace -- she’s very solid in who she is.

Isabel: “You’ll Find A Way” by Santogold. Isabel’s a very . . . noisy character. The mind at war with itself.

Cole: Oh man, Cole is difficult, because he’s so . . . volatile. He changes a lot over the course of the trilogy, but at the end of Linger, I’ll go with “Gutter” by Paper Route.

Beck: Oh Beck, you complicated thing you. Can I have two for him? Can you stop me? He’s many things to many people--most of all to Sam, and a big part of the series is Sam coming to grips with all those sides of him. I’m going to go with Bjork’s “Vökuró” and Gravenhurst’s “Black Holes in the Sand”.

Q: Who would you rather spend a Saturday afternoon with—a faerie or a werewolf?

Stiefvater: A werewolf. Just so long as it was warm and they weren’t a Pearl Jam fan.

Product Description
In Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver, Grace and Sam found each other.  Now, in Linger, they must fight to be together. For Grace, this means defying her parents and keeping a very dangerous secret about her own well-being. For Sam, this means grappling with his werewolf past . . . and figuring out a way to survive into the future. Add into the mix a new wolf named Cole, whose own past has the potential to destroy the whole pack.  And Isabelle, who already lost her brother to the wolves . . . and is nonetheless drawn to Cole.

At turns harrowing and euphoric, Linger is a spellbinding love story that explores both sides of love -- the light and the dark, the warm and the cold -- in a way you will never forget.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Heartbreaking-Great Sequel!   September 7, 2010
Mundie Moms (Katieb)
I laughed, I balled, and I felt every emotion possible as I read Linger. I was so captivated by it that I literally could not put the book down until I was done reading it. Once I was finished, I wanted to read it again. Linger is literally one of my favorite reads and one I will read again and again. I adore Maggie's writing and the in depth world and characters she has created. She's left me feeling torn between who I like more, Sam or Cole.

Linger is one of those rare books where the author allows you to not only become part of the main character's lives, but one where you get to become a part of the supporting characters lives as well. I really enjoyed Linger being from 4 different points of view, as that broadened the story a lot more me. I was able see all different sides of the story, and what each person and wolf is dealing with and how they change and grow by the end of the book. I liked seeing each of the characters through someone else's eyes and getting to know the character's own personal stories.

Not only are Grace and Sam's point of views ones that will leave you sighing at times and other times grabbing for a box of tissues, but Cole and Isabelle's point of views are both humorous and heart breaking. Isabelle had me laughing out loud when Cole provided me with understanding why those who turn may like being wolves, when Sam didn't. Cole brought more realism to the story. I wonder how many people wouldn't love a new chance at a different life, when the one life you were living, wasn't worth living any more. I liked seeing the different point of views on being a wolf with both Sam and Cole, as they both viewed it so differently. That's what made it more real for me.

Cole's character seemed to be such a pivotal one. I liked that he was the one who was there for Sam, when Sam couldn't stand him. Sam and Grace's relationship is amazing. I love their sweet moments together. I felt their joys and sorrows and if I say anything else, than I'll be spoiling the book, which is a little tempting as there's so many things to talk about. I will say that Sam and Grace both showed an inner strength at various times in the story that will pull at your heart. The ending may leave you yelling, crying and turning the pages hoping to find out what happens next, only to realize we have to wait for Forever's release.

Linger kept it's believability, which I really enjoyed. I think sometimes authors lose the chemistry and the draw they had for me in their first books, when they write their second books and then find it again in their third books. For me, Linger didn't lose that at all. It took what Shiver had and took it to the next level. Linger is a gripping, emotional roller coaster ride I didn't want to be done with when it came to an end. Now I'm left wondering what will happen to Grace, Cole and Sam in the next book. The ending left me very curious as to which direction Forever will take.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Shiver, but....   September 5, 2010

Still good. As soon as I finished Shiver I bought Linger eager to join Sam and Grace again. I didn't find the introduction of narrative by Cole and Isabel to be a problem like some people. Overall I found the story a bit predictable and I was disappointed with the ending, but it was a great set up for Forever.

5 out of 5 stars Linger Through This   September 5, 2010
Galleysmith (Metro DC)
This review assumes you have read the first in the series Shiver [[...]]. Any comments below may be considered spoilers based on that assumption.

Linger, oh how I loved you! Even more than your predecessor Shiver if that's possible.

Still with the lyrical prose. Still with the awesome infusion of supernatural/paranormal elements into the realistic world we all know. Still with the fantastically angsty, against all odds love story of Grace and Sam. Only this time....changes are a foot with the wolf pack.

BIG time.

First, we have the addition of uber sexy, rock-star cool Cole to the pack. Stiefvater, herself, recently blogged to say Cole sounds like "sex on a stick" in the audio version. Hmmmm....yum yum gimme some! Cole is one of the Canada wolves created by Beck as part of Shiver's plot. As lost as most, he is looking to escape his fame-laden and drug amplified life in the most dramatic and overstated way. Man, the layers on this guy. It'll have you weeping like you're peeling an onion to get to the heart of it all.

Of course, his presence immediately means he and Isabel, resident human bitch on wheels, are completely destined for each other. **sings** loving it! Can see it splintering off into it's own set of books.

The differences between the two relationships Linger focuses on are compelling. Sam and Grace are still deeply in love, connected on an almost etherial plane. Where, Cole and Isabel have an amazing push and pull, a will they or won't they, dynamic. They have chemistry and sexual tension to spare, I tell ya. But, romance isn't the only thing in the air. Cole and Sam are almost immediately at odds, each bringing the other's past to the forefront in a profound and and almost tragic way. They learn from each other but not before ripping some hard earned bandaids away.

So remember my comments in my review of Shiver about how I thought it a good idea to have more parental involvement by Grace's mom and dad? Yea? Well we get it tenfold in Linger. Mamma and Pappa Brisbane are making up for lost time by putting their feet down twice as hard. Overcompensation, thy name is mammy and pappy. Seriously, think of Grace as being on foot in a cell people. It's not pretty.

I'm hopeful that we get to see some resolution to Olivia's becoming a wolf at the end of Shiver in the final book. Her presence wasn't entirely missing from Linger, but the references that were provided made me wonder why we didn't get more of that particular story. I'm sure it's by design and I have full faith in Steifvater's storytelling to know that we'll get an excellent resolution. It's one of the many reasons I'm already eagerly anticipating the final book in the series.

The other reason?

The awesome ending to this story. As was the case with Shiver, I wasn't surprised by the outcome of Linger. Despite having already heard rumors of the end result we were clearly lead down that path in how the story was told. By design, I believe we were supposed to know. I think more than anything it was the how we got there than what the event itself was.

So, do I really need to say it? Like really? Because I totally will. I'll totally tell you to run out and get this book. I'll definitely tell you that it's worth reading right away. I'll even let you in on the secret that it's (in my estimation) better than the first. Do I need to say more?

5 out of 5 stars Transforming into breathless life   September 2, 2010
Dorri (Seattle, WA United States)
I'm not sure how I feel....delighted, hurt, dreamy, edgy. All and none are true. How about this book made me feel.

There are many truths in the Mercy Falls world. The first, Sam loves Grace. The second, Grace loves Sam. Now if only their worlds wouldn't keep shifting between them. Finally Sam has made himself a real boy only to find Grace smelling more and more wolf. Will her latent wolf infection make her one of the wolves lost to the winter cold? Or will she linger in her human shell?

Cole, a new wolf, doesn't want to be human any more. Why he is the first to change into a human for the summer is beyond him. In order to stay wolf, he would do anything to the point of freezing himself in the bathtub. He is broken edges raking at everyone around him. The only thing to blunt his self is the ragged edges of Isabel. She coats his edges in hard reality. Strangely attracted to Cole, Isabel blooms into a wonderously poisonous flower to entice him. She is the brutal truths Sam, Grace and Cole fear to see, even as she stands by their sides.

Even with all the shifting of their lives, the four of them make this book reach for the cold stars above and transform into breathless life. A dead brothers shirt, paper cranes, a red coffee pot and scarred hands. Each item is more than it seems.

I loved this book. I'm praying to the muses and the gods of poetry that Maggie Stiefvater writes anther book in this series.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as Shiver but still great!   September 1, 2010
Ash
Well I was anxiously anticipating Linger and I will say that for the most part, it was worth the wait. The thing I loved most about Shiver was Sam and Grace's undeniable connection but from Linger we find ourselves in the throes of a love triangle. Really, I'm quite tired of those! I would like to see a book where people fall in love and that's just it...they're happy and in love, they face conflict of course, come through it and are better than ever. Why does there always have to be a love triangle, grrr. Aside from that, it's nice to see Sam human again even though somewhere in the back of your mind you can only think that it's surely going to be short lived. But all in all this was an enjoyable read and I definitely look forward to the last and final installment, Forever.
