Great content, so-so pictures - perfect for younger kids! July 27, 2010 H. Stull (Gig Harbor, WA) I love love love the content. This is a great overview of the Bible for kids keeping God's repemptive plan at the forefront. I have a 2 and 3 year old who love this "Bible book" as they call it, and it prompts a lot of further questions about the stories.
I really don't prefer the pictures. I want my kids to know that the Bible is real and the events actually happened. The pictures are simplistic; sometimes showing 5-6 people representing the whole nation of Israel. But I've reconciled this in my mind as being okay for little ones. We will move on as they get bigger to more realistic illustrations.
A great book for younger kids! I find myself encouraged as I read it to them as well.
Evangelical Truth For Preschoolers May 12, 2010 J. Crane 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
We bought this for our 5 year old son as an Easter gift. We own several other children's bibles and none have ever captured his attention for more than 15 seconds. I am happy to say that not only did he hang on every word; but he begged for me to read more! We read between 1 and 4 sections each night to him and his 7 y/o sister. Although she is old enough to read her Discoverer's Bible on her own, she enjoyed listening to this one as well. I was very surprised at the depth of questions that came after reading this each night. "What is the Holy Spirit?" "Is the Bible true?" and more came flowing out of my 5 y/o's mouth. Since I am a knowledgeable parent who has studied scripture, I loved being able to share and discuss these things at bedtime. It does an excellent job of presenting the Bible as one "Big Picture" of salvation. No, it doesn't follow chapter and verse and yes, it skims over a lot of things. As someone who has read the Bible in different versions several times, I have to say that it is fairly simplistic. But that's the beauty of it! Salvation is simple! If you're looking for something that will inspire your children to want a relationship with Christ, this is the Bible for you. You are still going to need a "real Bible" for memorization and further study, but this is a GREAT starting point.
a GLARING error May 9, 2010 C. W. Hawkins (Birmingham, AL) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I like the idea of tracing God's redemptive plan throughout the Bible, but the execution of that idea here is terrible. The worst error is on p.282- "a dove flew down and rested on Jesus." Actually, the Holy Spirit came down like a dove and rested on him. Writing in a bird in place of the Spirit is inexcusable. The other one and two star reviews here have good points as well-all describing genuine shortcomings of this book. I recommend that it be avoided.
GREAT CONTENT, HORRIBLE PICTURES April 3, 2010 magnolia 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was both pleased and dissappointed with this book. The content was everything I expected giving the continuous story of the Bible from beginning to end in a way children can understand. I was very dissappointed with the pictures because of which I don't know if I will even use this book. They are very comic cartoon like. I would love to see this book redone with different illustrations.
Punitive view of God March 14, 2010 Rachael (Illinois) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was disappointed in this Bible. The back cover sounds quite promising - "The Bible is a big book, about a big God, who keeps a big promise!"
But the Old Testament stories are very negative - the overarching message I received was "People sin and God gets angry and punishes them. Over and over and over again. Then Jesus comes!" Both my husband and myself found ourselves doing a lot of rewording of the stories as we read to our son. The New Testament stories are done quite well, but I am so disappointed that the authors didn't seem to know how to handle the OT.
This bible tells the story of redemption through a punitive lens rather than a grace-based lens. The Jesus Storybook Bible is much better - it also attempts to weave the biblical narrative into the overarching story of salvation, but with a focus on grace and God as one who has a Plan in the midst of sin and suffering, instead of being focused on man's screw-ups.
I also did not like the illustrations in this Bible - the characters all look like northern Europeans instead of Middle Eastern with darker skin (this is another area where the Jesus Storybook Bible is much better - the illustrations are much more engaging and multi-ethnic).
All in all it is not a Bible I would recommend or give as a gift. There are some good stories in there, and the authors make a nice attempt, but it's just not the message about who God is that I want to communicate to my children.
