5 out of 5 stars Richard Scarry's Picture Dictionary - Great Start for Learning   February 10, 2008
Laura L. Ocallaghan (Houston, TX, USA)
This book was one of my main teaching aids growing up; however, my child will need some time to understand Richard Scarry's concept (along with some of his other books as well) of combining several theories and objects on one page that can confuse a young or developmentally challenged child. Not saying that it's impossible, but would take time. I say let them get interested in colors and basic shapes first, then direct them to the pictures and start introducing them to what they are by definition. Not only are there definitions and body parts and other concepts, but many colors, ideas and concepts that are seen in your every-day world like in the home and on the job and in different situations too if you can capture your child's interest long enough to sit still to listen to your reading and place the story with the pictures in a concept that they understand. 4 out of 5 stars This book played a big part in my daughter's development   October 25, 2004

My daughter, who is in the first grade, is reading at the fourth or fifth grade level. She could read before she turned four, and I think a big part of that was this book. We had the old, politically incorrect version, and we literally read it to pieces. Now I'm ordering for my niece, who just turned one. This book is a great vocabulary builder for little ones. One word of warning: after the five hundredth reading it gets a little old for the adults, but it is a great book for learning vocabulary and spelling of everyday words.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite book!   November 24, 1999
I highly reccomend this book! It's full of illustrations and words, but it always uses each word in context of a sentence, so the child will understand exactly what each word means. Of course, being a Richard Scarry book, it also is extremely entertaining for parent and child. We read this one every day by my daughter's request. Such a good book for your collection!
