Amazon.com Review
Summer in the tiny Texas town of Antler is traditionally a time for enjoying Wylie Womack's Bahama Mama snow cones and racking up the pins at Kelly's Bowl-a-Rama, but this year it's not going well for Toby Wilson. His 13-year-old heart has been broken twice: once by his mother, who left him and his father to become a country singer in Nashville, and then again by his crush Scarlett Stalling, the town beauty who barely acknowledges Toby's existence. But when Zachary Beaver, "The World's Fattest Boy," comes to Antler as part of a traveling sideshow, Toby begins to realize that there might just be people who have it worse than him. By reaching out to Zachary in small ways--such as helping him realize his lifelong dream of being baptized--Toby is better able to put his own problems into perspective. At the baptism, Toby finally feels at peace: "Zachary smiles and I wonder if he's feeling different. Because standing here waist deep in Gossimer's Lake... I'm feeling different--light and good and maybe even holy." By summer's end, Toby's friendship with Zachary has provided him with the emotional stamina to begin dealing with his mother's decision and to gracefully accept the fact that Scarlett will forever be just beyond his reach.

With Zachary Beaver, Kimberly Willis Holt, author of the award-winning My Louisiana Sky, further explores southern-flavored small town life. Toby's quirky, yet ultimately rewarding coming of age story will serve as a gentle reminder to teens that sometimes the best way to work through your problems is by helping others with theirs. (Ages 11 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert

5 out of 5 stars Book review   October 20, 2008
Jessica Herzog (San Antonio, Tx USA)
I had to buy this book for a children's literature class that I am taking at the University of Texas at San Antonio, we needed to read a book by Kimberly Willis-Holt, whom I will be meeting October 30. I am really glad that I chose this book, it is an easy read and great to read to a young audience.

4 out of 5 stars Zach Rocks   May 22, 2007
Nothing ever happens in Toby and Cal's small town of Antler, Texas, until the summer of 1971 when Zachary Beaver, the fattest boy in the world, comes to town. Zachary is very depressed; his mom died right after he was born, and he is "The Fattest Boy in the World," so he has crowds looking and staring at him every day. Zachary can be nice or rude at any time and he has a very hard time just getting around. Zachary has to stay alone in his trailer while his guardian, Paulie Rankin, looks for a new sideshow act. Meanwhile Toby's life is going downhill; his mom left the family to become a singer. Cal's older brother, Wayne, has left town to go fight in the Vietnam War and the girl of Toby's dreams is going out with another guy. How will Toby and Cal get their family and friends back? Can Cal and Toby help Zachary be happier and can Zachary help Cal and Toby get their friends and family back?

Opinion

My opinion of the book is very positive. I liked this book because the author is very descriptive and I can actually picture what is happening. When the author describes Zachary I don't need a picture to see him because I can already see him clearly in your head. The author also makes me think what it would be like to be in Zachary's shoes. If you are interested in realistic stories or stories of small towns doing bigger things that would happen in New York or London you will absolutely love this book as much as I did.

5 out of 5 stars When Zachary Beaver came to town   May 22, 2007
In the book When Zachary Beaver Came to Town the supposovly fattest boy in the world comes to the small panhandle town of Antler,Texas the life of Toby Wilson is about to change forever. After seeing Zachary in his trailer they looked in the Guiness book of world recordsonly to find that Zachary isn't the fattest person in the world. When forced to visit Zachary by sheriff Levi,Toby finds that people in Antler are giving Zachary food. When a car parks infront of Cal's house officers tell grave news that Wayne, Cal's brother died in Vietnam and there was a funeral for Wayne.Towards the end of the book Zachary gets baptized at Gossimer lake.

5 out of 5 stars When Zachary Beaver Came to Town   May 22, 2007
Nothing ever happens in Antler,Texas as said by Toby in When Zachary Beaver Came to Town nothing at all until a trailor comes to town with the words "Fattest Kid in the World!"All around town people are getting 2$ and linning up to see the Fattest Boy in the World.Toby's mother was in Nashville,Tennesee and sent Toby a letter saying she wouldnt be comming back to Antler but staying in Nashville. Many more things will happen in Toby's young life. Check out When Zachary Beaver Came to Town right away!If you have any questions I can give you just a little bit more info.1. An interesting character in the book is Zachary because he has a great imagination when he thinks that the cotton fields are a giant ocean.A suprising part in the book is when Toby danced with Scarlett (the girl of his dreams) and she didn't know that Toby liked her.I think I have told to much so I hope you check out When Zachary Beaver Came to Town because it rocks!

4 out of 5 stars the fat boy   May 22, 2007
Does he really weigh 400 pounds? Supposidly, the fattest boy in the world is in Antler,Texas. It all began over the summer when Toby`s mom went to become a country singer. Also, when Cal`s older brother went to fight in the war.Although, the secrect about Scarlets kiss still is yet to be told by Toby.Whoever thought that the summer could go wrong, but it did! It was a very sad day for everyone. It was the day wayne died! I did not like that part of the book because Wayne was the one everyone looked up to.Anyway, the good news is,Zachary got baptized! So over all the book was FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
