Product Description

Wise, sarcastic, hilarious and memorable words from a favorite sport.

Home Plate Don't Move is a celebration of the wit and wisdom of baseball. Some selections are as timely as today's headlines while many others are timeless -- there's something for everyone, from insights to insults to inanities.

What is it about baseball that lends itself to clever quotes? W.P. Kinsella, author of Field of Dreams, writes that baseball is "a game of anticipation, a game for the thinking fan, a game where little gems of wisdom or whimsy can be created in the dugout, the bullpen or the press box during long, hot afternoons and evenings of baseball."

Some of the more than 400 quotes are:

  • "He looks like a greyhound, but he runs like a bus."
    - George Brett
  • "I don't want them to forget Ruth. I just want them to remember me."
    - Hank Aaron
  • "It ain't bragging if you can do it."
    - Dizzy Dean
  • "I'm throwing just as hard as I ever did. The ball's just not getting there as fast."
    - Lefty Grove
  • "Any ballplayer that don't sign autographs for little kids ain't an American. He's a Communist."
    - Rogers Hornsby

This is just a fantastic read! Compiled in no particular order, but the author brings out the personalities of stars of baseballs past and their quotes and phrases.
